Top European M&A Advisers of 2017 named by Mergermarket

London, United Kingdom, 8th December 2017: Mergermarket, leading provider of M&A data and intelligence, announced the winners of the 2017 European M&A Awards last night at a gala dinner at Banqueting House in London. The judging panel named 42 winners in financial and legal advisory from the region. The rigorous judging process included an analysis of Mergermarket’s market-leading league tables followed by a shortlist announcement and scrutiny by a panel of expert judges.
Kathleen Van Aerden, Head of Research EMEA at Mergermarket and member of the judging panel commented on the 2017 European M&A landscape:
“While global M&A stumbled in 2017 due to increasing uncertainty, Europe has been a bright spot. Deals targeting the region account for almost a third of total M&A, the highest figure for a number of years, as the economic recovery in Europe gains pace. The Eurozone in particular has seen strong M&A deal-flow, on the back of strong GDP figures across the continent.”
M&A Financial advisers:
Goldman Sachs received the award for European M&A Financial Adviser of the Year reclaiming the title from last year’s winners Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Goldman Sachs advised on a number of high-profile mandates this year including Qualcomm’s £37.5bn bid for NXP Semiconductors, Linde in its £35bn merger with Praxair and Atlantia’s £26bn approach for Abertis. EY received the accolade of European Mid-Market Financial Adviser of the Year in acknowledgement of the growth in their advisory offering on mid-market transactions.
M&A Legal advisers:
Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer was awarded European M&A Legal Adviser of the Year as well as topping Mergermarket’s rankings, having advised on 77 deals including mandates for Johnson & Johnson, Total, Hellman & Friendman and Aberdeen Asset Management. Baker McKenzie picked up the Mid-Market Legal Adviser award recognising their client-centric approach including advising on key cross-border European mid-market M&A deals.
Private equity:
Rothschild took home the prize for Private Equity Financial Adviser of 2017 having been involved in the £1.3bn sale of Parkdean Resorts to Epiris, running the successful sale of ABD Safegate and Bain Capital’s takeover of Stada. CMS was awarded Private Equity Legal Adviser courtesy of trusted advice to prominent clients including BC Partners, CVC, Epiris, CVC Inflexion, Aurelius, Oaktree and LDC.
M&A Deal of the Year:
In an audience vote on the evening, the buyout of Visma was crowned the European M&A Deal of the Year. The award was collected by ABG Sundal Collier Holding on behalf of their client KKR.
